About SEO

SEO is a lot more than just keywords.

SEO sign

SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimisation.

Google is currently the largest search engine, with Yahoo and Bing making up the top three.

There’s another section on this site about video marketing, so I’m not going to discuss YouTube here.

Web sites are ranked according to how well they meet the SEO engine algorithm.

It’s about a lot more than having a fabulous state of the art website!

Some of the highest ranking sites are really quite ordinary, certainly nothing special to look at and they may not have anywhere near as much content as a site ranking further down the list.

So exactly what determines which page is listed first on Google, or Yahoo, or Bing?

Well, it’s a combination of things that convince Google or the other search engines that your SEO makes this THE SITE to go to for your industry or niche. This is referred to as an ‘authority site’.

First of all we have keywords, short tail and long tail – which many people have heard about but few really understand. Good SEO keyword research and utilisation without flooding the site (Google doesn’t like that) is an integral part of a successful site. We research and implement keywords, digging deep to find those nuggets that boost your site up the rankings and inserting them into your site on a monthly basis.

Then we have Backlinks – which occur when another site has a link back to your site. Not all backlinks are equal though – if the link is one way to your site, it is considered better than a reciprocal link (where your site displays a link back). If the link to your site is from another site that is relevant to your site, it is considered better than one that isn’t.

For example, if you have a site about video games and a backlink is from a gardening site – this would be irrelevant and not a really good backlink. However, if the link came from a World of Warcraft site, then that would be considered valuable because of its relevance to video games.

We generate backlinks from hundreds of relevant sites by creating link wheels, press releases and blog posts regularly.

Videos:

Google LOVES videos – mainly because people searching google love to watch videos rather than read reams and reams of script. Video content is rapidly becoming paramount. The longer a viewer stays on your site, the better Google likes it. Which is another good reason for adding videos – people stay and watch them!

All these things combined tell the search engines that here is a site that has really relevant content, a lot of peer sites like it and viewers spend time on it.

Why is Ranking Important?

On average, the first page of a Google search result gets over 50% of the web traffic for that search from all the pages on that subject listed on Google.

It’s not hard to understand why everyone is so keen to get onto page one!
